Astuni Gallery (Pietrasanta)
The exhibition M.Southern California – Italy 1995/2009 serves as a visual and logical extension of the Workshop On Grand Unification (WOGU), transforming the gallery into a “visual laboratory” that grapples with one of the greatest challenges in modern physics: the search for a T.O.E. (Theory of Everything).
The project finds its inspiration in the crucial year of 1995, when physicist Edward Witten resolved a major impasse in the scientific community. At the time, five competing and seemingly irreconcilable versions of String Theory threatened to undermine each other. Witten’s “Superstring Revolution” proved that these five variants—Type I, IIA, IIB, and the two Heterotic theories—were mathematically equivalent: essentially the same melody played on different instruments. This unification became known as M-Theory.
The Installation: Background Inside Platform Through M Influence: Rather than merely documenting these scientific milestones, Pozzi creates a physical equivalent of the theory. The long, narrow space of the gallery is occupied by a singular, modular walkway consisting of: Five modules composed of water, linoleum, and aluminum. Electromagnetic levitation fields that suspend natural sea sponges above the platforms.
Each module represents a different “actor” in this quantum play, where the sponges—organic and porous—hover in a state of dual identity. The rhythm of the installation culminates in a photographic counterpart: a pentagonal structure made of light. This light cone represents the “zero point” of a theory of everything—the moment where information thins out to a single focal point before bursting back into the indeterminacy of the known universe.
At its core, M.Southern California – Italy 1995/2009 asks what constitutes the intrinsic physicality of space. By utilizing the support of gravity as a “non-space space,” Pozzi creates a landscape that is simultaneously theoretical and tangible. It is a place where, as Loop Quantum Gravity predicts, every possible geometry of our universe begins to emerge from the void.
