Perimeter Institute

This photograph documents a chalk drawing performance on the giant blackboard of the “Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas” at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario.

The performance took place in 2012, when Luca Pozzi was invited to the Perimeter Institute as an Artist Guest. This residency was a pivotal stop in his broader, self-described “interdisciplinary pilgrimage”—a personal and research-driven journey aimed at bridging the gap between contemporary art and advanced physics. Throughout this journey, Pozzi immersed himself in some of the world’s most prestigious scientific communities, with travels that also took him to the Albert Einstein Institute in Golm, Germany; Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania; the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain; and the Centre de Physique Théorique at Aix-Marseille Université in Luminy, France.

Captured in situ, these Lavagne Pittoriche (Pictorial Blackboards) were photographed in deep connection with their specific architectural surroundings. They were then conceptually teleported and transformed into large-scale wallpapers, designed to function as connective gates—wormholes of sorts—linking the spaces of scientific research with those of contemporary art museums.
