Loops 2015

In July 2015, on the occasion of the prestigious international conference Loops ’15 in Erlangen, Germany, artist Luca Pozzi blurred the boundaries between disciplines with a mimetic lecture-performance delivered during the plenary session. The conference, the eighth installment of a series established in 2004, stands as the global epicenter for research into Loop Quantum Gravity, a theoretical physics approach aimed at unifying the two main pillars of our understanding of the cosmos. Deliberately coinciding with the centenary of the publication of Albert Einstein’s General Relativity, Pozzi’s speech is not a mere academic presentation, but a true performative act. By embedding himself in the very heart of the scientific community and speaking its language, the artist camouflages among the speakers to raise a crucial point: the synthesis of General Relativity with Quantum Field Theory remains not only the most significant unresolved problem in modern foundational physics, but also one of the most fascinating conceptual challenges for contemporary art.

The video documentation of the event thus transforms into a sort of visual and philosophical allegory. It becomes the living proof of a creative short-circuit where art does not simply illustrate science, but rather appropries its spaces and complexities. Through this gesture, Pozzi demonstrates how both disciplines are ultimately trying to decode the same invisible reality that surrounds us, offering a profound reflection on space, time, and the role of the artist as a bridge between seemingly distant worlds.
